Speights & Runyan has initiated, with Court approval, the claims process for a $40,000,000.00 settlement with certain asbestos manufacturers. The underlying lawsuit was filed by Anderson Memorial Hospital through its counsel, Speights & Runyan. In 2001, the South Carolina Circuit Court certified a class action on behalf of South Carolina building owners whose property contained or previously contained asbestos-containing surfacing materials, including but not limited to the owners of private residences, commercial buildings, and county and municipal government buildings. The Court excluded only five categories of buildings from the certified class action: any building owned by the state government and subject to a prior lawsuit; any building owned by the federal government; any commercial building leased to the federal government after May 30, 1986, any public or private elementary or secondary school which did not opt out of the nationwide schools class action; and any public or private college or university which did not opt out of the nationwide universities class action.
